Preparing Your Car For Winter
Winter is the season where very low temperature can be expected. Although maintaining your car is important at all times, it is during the winter season that you need to do it more often because your car is vunerable to different types of damage. Extremely cold weather can affect the performance of your car. The parts that are most affected by the weather are the lubrication system, battery, and cooling system.
The lubrication system includes the motor oil of your car. Motor oil should be checked regularly. The main purpose of oil in your car is to clean, cool and lubricate the moving parts. Oil is drawn from the oil pan by the oil pump through the oil filter into the oil gallery. It is forced through the crank shaft and through small ports, directly onto the bearings. During winter, oil gets thick and doesn’t circulate properly, leading to severe engine damage.
As regards to the car’s battery, it is best to keep your car on the covered garage when not in use. Exposing it to snow and extremely cold temperature can decrease the performance of your battery.
Another part that is most affected during cold weather is the cooling system. Most of the energy in the gasoline (perhaps 70%) is converted into heat, and it is the job of the cooling system to take care of that heat. When the engine is cold, components wear out faster and the engine is less efficient. Cooling system allows engine to heat up as fast as possible and keeps the engine in constant temperature.
